England Announce Squads, Jacob Bethell to Make History
England has officially revealed their squads for the upcoming white-ball cricket series. They will face South Africa in a three-match ODI and T20 series, with the ODIs starting on Tuesday, September 2, at Headingley in Leeds. Following that, England will travel to Ireland for a three-match T20I series, beginning Wednesday, September 17, at Malahide, Dublin.
A historic announcement comes in the T20I series against Ireland: 21-year-old all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been named captain. This will be his first time leading the England Men’s team, and he is set to become the youngest-ever English captain in an international match.
This series will be a great opportunity for young talents like Bethell to shine on the international stage while England gears up for important white-ball fixtures.
Sonny Baker Earns First England Call-Up as Bethell Prepares to Captain T20s
England’s white-ball squads see some exciting new faces and opportunities. Pacer Sonny Baker has been called up to the senior squad for the first time after impressive performances with the England Lions over the winter and in domestic white-ball competitions for Hampshire and Manchester Originals.
For the T20 series in Ireland, most of England’s established all-format players have been rested, giving young talents like Jacob Bethell the chance to shine. Bethell, just 21, will captain the T20 side, becoming the youngest-ever English captain in an international match.
England Men’s chief selector Luke Wright praised both players:
“Jacob has impressed with his leadership qualities and the series against Ireland will help him further develop those skills. Sonny has been on our radar for a while, performed strongly with the Lions, and has carried that form into the domestic white-ball season, so he rightly earns this opportunity.”
With Marcus Trescothick stepping in as head coach for the Ireland T20s, the series promises a platform for England’s emerging stars to make their mark.
