CPL 2025: Nicholas Pooran takes over Trinbago captaincy from Kieron Pollard

CPL 2025 has kicked off with a significant leadership shuffle at one of its most successful franchises — Trinbago Knight Riders. Power-packed southpaw Nicholas Pooran has been entrusted with team captaincy, taking over the reins from veteran superstar Kieron Pollard, who remains an integral part of the playing group. The change signals a fresh era at TKR — balancing youthful dynamism with seasoned experience — as the franchise eyes yet another CPL title.

Pooran’s appointment reflects TKR’s long-term vision. The Trinidadian wicketkeeper-batsman has already proven his leadership credentials at the international level and now steps into a high-profile role where he will be guiding the likes of Pollard, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell — three of the most iconic T20 all-rounders in world cricket. Calling it a “privilege,” Pooran has acknowledged the enormity of the opportunity, noting the confidence boost he receives from having such a star-studded core around him.

What further strengthens Trinbago’s backroom is the return of Dwayne Bravo, who rejoins the setup — this time as head coach — adding another layer of tactical depth and winning experience. Pooran, who is known for his attacking instincts and fearless brand of cricket, now has the stage set to usher in a new chapter in Trinbago Knight Riders’ legacy. With a rock-solid support group and a world-class squad at his disposal, all eyes will be on whether this captaincy transition can script yet another CPL triumph for the men in red and black.

Kieron Pollard Explains Why He Handed Trinbago Captaincy to Nicholas Pooran (CPL 2025)

Veteran all-rounder Kieron Pollard has opened up on his decision to step down as captain of the Trinbago Knight Riders ahead of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 season. Pollard, who led TKR to multiple CPL titles, confirmed that Nicholas Pooran’s promotion to captaincy was part of a long-term succession plan by the franchise.

Pollard admitted that the Trinbago management had been grooming Pooran for leadership over the past few years, teaching him the “TKR way” and allowing him to absorb the team’s values and principles. With the arrival of Dwayne Bravo as head coach, the team management felt that CPL 2025 was the ideal time to make the captaincy transition.

“We believe grooming the next generation is very important… Pooran is home-grown, and I think this is the right opportunity for him,” Pollard said while speaking to ESPNcricinfo.

Pollard also hinted that he may not be playing for much longer, making it crucial for the Knight Riders to build a leadership group for the future.

“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be playing for, but I’m happy for the opportunity to still be on the field and help Nicholas ease into this role,” he added.

TKR Begin Their CPL 2025 Campaign on August 17

The Trinbago Knight Riders will kick off their CPL 2025 campaign against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Sunday, August 17 at Warner Park, Basseterre. Newly appointed skipper Nicholas Pooran will be hoping to start the season with a strong win as TKR hunt for yet another CPL title.
