AUS vs SA 2025, 2nd T20I Review: Brevis’ Historic Century Sets Stage for Epic Series Decider

AUS vs SA 2025:South Africa kept their T20I series hopes alive in style, courtesy of a breathtaking century from rising star Dewald Brevis. His knock not only powered the Proteas to victory at Marrara Stadium in Darwin but also levelled the three-match series 1-1, setting up a thrilling decider.

The game began with Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Australia made two changes, bringing in Alex Carey and Sean Abbott, while South Africa also shuffled their lineup with two alterations of their own.

Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton opened for the visitors, giving them a flying start with 34 runs in just the first three overs. But Australia’s Glenn Maxwell quickly turned the tide, striking twice in quick succession to peg the Proteas back. By the end of the powerplay, the hosts had already claimed three wickets, giving them an early upper hand—before Brevis’ heroics changed the game’s complexion entirely.

Once South Africa lost their third wicket, the Johannesburg-born Dewald Brevis strode out to join Tristan Stubbs, and the match’s momentum shifted dramatically. The pair put on a dazzling display of power-hitting and smart strike rotation, adding 126 runs off just 57 balls for the fourth wicket. Stubbs eventually fell to Adam Zampa for 31, but by then, the foundation for a massive total had already been laid.

Brevis, just 22 years old, was in imperious form. He not only became the third-youngest player to score a fifty-plus knock for South Africa in T20Is, but also smashed the second-fastest century by a South African in the format. The partnership with Stubbs was historic too—South Africa’s first century stand against Australia in 11 years.

By the end of his masterclass, Brevis was unbeaten on a staggering 125 off 56 deliveries, peppered with 12 boundaries and 8 sixes. In doing so, he broke Ruturaj Gaikwad’s mark of 123* to claim the record for the highest individual T20I score by a South African. His innings powered the Proteas to 218—their highest-ever T20I total against Australia. For the home side, Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis were the pick of the bowlers, each claiming two wickets, though neither could stop the Brevis blitz.
