AUS vs IND 2025:Kohli & Rohit’s ODI Future: Sourav Ganguly Clears the Air
When Sourav Ganguly was BCCI President from 2019 to 2022, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the absolute superstars of Indian cricket. They dominated headlines, broke records, and carried India’s batting in all three formats.
Fast forward to 2025 — the cricketing landscape has changed. Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from Tests and T20Is, leaving only ODI cricket as their active international format. But now, even that future seems uncertain.
Retirement Rumours Before the Australia Tour
Recent reports suggest that the October ODI series against Australia — scheduled in Perth (Oct 19), Adelaide (Oct 23), and Sydney (Oct 25) — could be their final appearance in the 50-over game.
The speculation has grown louder with every passing day, leading fans to wonder: Is this the end of an era in Indian ODI cricket?
Ganguly’s Response: Performance Over Speculation
Speaking at an AWL Agri Business Ltd event, Sourav Ganguly was asked about these rumours. His answer was firm yet diplomatic:
“I’m not aware of this, can’t comment on this. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue.”
The former India captain emphasised that form and fitness should decide their future, not speculation. He also lauded their incredible careers:
-
Virat Kohli – 3rd highest run-getter in ODI history, known for unmatched consistency.
-
Rohit Sharma – Holder of the highest individual score in ODI cricket (264).
Kohli and Rohit played important roles in helping India win the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Rohit led the team from the front and won the Player of the Match award in the final against New Zealand. On the other hand, Kohli finished as the fifth-highest run-getter in the tournament, with 218 runs to his name from five innings, at an average of 54.50.
Rohit has a terrific record in ODIs in Australia, as he averages 53.12, having scored 1328 runs from 30 innings. Kohli has also fared well Down Under, having aggregated 1327 runs from 29 innings at an average of 51.03.
