Match-Fixing Scandal Rocks Bangladesh Premier League  ( BPL ): Investigation Exposes Deep Corruption

The reputation of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) has been severely dented after a recent investigation confirmed the involvement of multiple teams, players, and officials in widespread match-fixing during the tournament’s previous edition. The explosive findings have sparked concerns about the league’s integrity, governance, and anti-corruption mechanisms.

What Did the Investigation Reveal?

According to a Prothom Alo report, the BPL investigation committee uncovered 36 suspicious events from last season, which included:

  • Odd batting collapses and bowling patterns

  • Deliberately bowled wides and loose deliveries

  • Questionable on-field decision-making

The probe flagged 10–12 cricketers, among whom two are current Bangladesh internationals (a pacer and an off-spinner). The involvement of active national players has intensified public outrage and alarm.

Players Classified Based on Evidence

Investigators graded the suspects based on the strength of evidence:

Category Description
Highly Flagged 3–4 players with strong links to corrupt activities
Medium Flagged Suspicious behavior but lacking conclusive proof
Low Flagged Minor inconsistencies, under observation

Notably, one of the accused was part of Bangladesh’s recent Sri Lanka tour squad, raising serious questions about potential contamination at the national team level.

Involvement Beyond Players

The scandal goes much deeper than just on-field actors:

  • A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) sub-committee member allegedly facilitated underhand deals between franchises and fixing agents.

  • Franchise officials from Durbar Rajshahi, Sylhet Strikers, and Dhaka Capitals have reportedly admitted involvement in manipulating match outcomes.

  • Even broadcast partners are under investigation — some TV channels are accused of earning 170–180 crore taka illegally through betting-related advertisements during BPL matches.

Expected Disciplinary Actions

Investigators are expected to recommend temporary bans on all accused players, officials, and managers — who must prove their innocence before being allowed to participate again. Most players under the spotlight are over 35, suggesting limited international impact but significant damage to the BPL brand.

What This Means for Bangladesh Cricket

These revelations have shaken public confidence and placed the BPL at a crossroads. The Bangladesh Cricket Board now faces immense pressure to:

  • Reform league governance

  • Tighten anti-corruption enforcement

  • Enhance transparency and oversight mechanisms

Unless swift and decisive actions are taken, the BPL risks long-term loss of credibility among fans, sponsors, and the international cricket community.
